  Two divisions:

  • adrenal cortex
  • adrenal medulla

  Adrenal cortex hormones control the "3S: Sugar, Salt, and Sex"
• Adrenal Cortex

  Glucocorticoids (Cortisol)

  • maintain blood glucose levels (sugar)
  • have anti inflammatory efect
• Adrenal Cortex

  Mineralocorticoids (e.g., Aldosterone)

  • maintain sodium and volume status (Salt)
  • increase sodium reabsorption
  • increase potassium excretion
• Adrenal Cortex

  Sex Hormones (Androgen and Estrogen)

  • responsible for some secondary sex characteristics
• Adrenal Medulla

  Secretes catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) through stimulation of the SNS and medulla oblongata
