  Depends on the circumstances and degree of harm inflicted

  Person cannot consent to an unlawful act or to the infliction of serious injury or grievous bodily harm
• Lawful correction of a child

  Parents who smack a child as a form of discipline must do so within strict parameters

  Physical act must not be unreasonable or excessive

  Appropriate to child's age and physical/mental development
• Lawful arrest

  Authority to carry out an arrest or is assisting a person who has authority

  Police officer
• Family violence

  Respond to harm that is not immediate, responds with excessive force- may be considered reasonable
