stratified
sampling
Involves
dividing
the
target
population
into different
sub
groups
or
‘strata’
(meaning layer).
|-> this will give you a
sample
that will
represent
the
size
of each
strata
Stratified
sampling procedure
Identify
how many people make up the
whole
population
Identify
each
strata/sub
group
within the
population
Calculate
the
number
of
people
required
for the sample from each
strata
which is
proportional
to the
size
of the
strata
in the
population
randomly
select (e.g. Hat method) the
required
number from the
whole
strata.
Stratified
sampling - advantages
representative
sample as it will
reflect
all
sub
groups
within the
population
-
high
population
validity
Stratified
sampling - disadvantages
the
identified
strata
(
subgroup
) cannot reflect all the ways people are
different
so its not
fully
representative
