  • The three main ports involved in the trade were London, Bristol and Liverpool
  • London: until 1698 was the only slave port

    By 1730 Bristol was carrying more slaves

    London then became a source of financial support
  • Bristol: geographically at an advantage to London

    The city boomed, fine new buildings, sugar-refining, glass-making grew as a result
  • Liverpool: previously a poor city but became the largest slave-ship construction site

    Had a large deep waterfront, not affected by tides so they could unload ships quickly & big ships could dock more easily
  • Scotland: independent until 1707

    Glasgow merchants traded only the tobacco not the slaves

    Small number of 30 slave ships deported from Scotland, but still involved because they owned companies included
