• Duty that knights owed to their lord in exchange for holding their land
• Had to serve in the king’s army for at least two months providing his own horse, weapons and

  armour
• Had to perform up to 40 days’ service in guarding the lord’s castle and training
• Helped raise money to pay the ransom if his lord was captured
• Across England there were up to 5,000 men who owed knight service for their land
