Interdict and excommunication

• The pope was able to use interdict and excommunication in the case of serious offence against the Church
• Interdict - the withdrawal of church services from an individual of country, meaning there were no baptisms, weddings or funerals
• Excommunication - the exclusion of an individual from the Church and all its services
• Both interdict and excommunication were believed to lead to hell
