Richard I as King

• Nicknamed “Richard the Lionheart” as he held a reputation as a warrior king
• Richard was the favourite son of his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and had been made Duke of

  Aquitaine in 1172
• At the time of his father’s death in 1189, Richard was already wealthy and powerful, whereas John,

  the favourite of their father, had no lands at all
• Richard was fearful of John becoming King so fought against his father with Philp II in 1187-9
• Richard was coronated on 3rd September 1189, where it was thought he was being attacked by the

  Jewish community
• Richard was a great warrior, had Christian duty in the crusades and was chivalrous
