  • Richard held a strip of land in France called the Vexin as dowry for marrying Philip’s sister Alice, but he had not married her

  • Both Richard and Philip wanted to be leader of the crusade
  • Richard was given a grand reception by the Sicilians in Messina, but Philip did not and was humiliated when he left Sicily and had to return due to bad weather
  • In Cyprus, Richard married Berengaria of Navarre, and Philip was humiliated again as he promised to marry his sister Alice and took her dowry
  • Richard conquered Cyprus and got 100,000 gold coins for it, but went back on his deal with Philip in July 1190 to split the money equally
  • Richard paid his soldiers at Acre in July 1191 more than Philip could afford, making Philip seem inferior
  • Richard and Phillip disputed over who should be king of Jerusalem, Richard favoured Guy de Lusignan while Philip supported Conrad de Montferrat- it was decided that Guy would be succeeded by Conrad
  • Philip left the crusade and returned to France
