The first march on Jerusalem, October 1191-January 1192

• The Christians were reluctant to advance to the Holy City for four main reasons
• The Christians feared Saladin's forces would surround them
• The Christians were worried they would be cut off from their supplies if they walked too far from the coast
• Jerusalem was protected with a string of Muslim fortresses and a strong outer wall that was believed to be hard to break through
• The Christians believed that holding onto Jerusalem would be hard as they had limited supplies
• In January 1192, Richard ordered his troops to retreat
• Richard received word of Prince John’s rebellion, so he needed to return to the Angevin Empire as soon as possible
