The second march, June-July 1192

• Within four days of the second march, they had reached Beit Nuba, which was 12 miles away from Jerusalem
• Saladin was experiencing difficulties in keeping his army together so the crusaders could have taken Jerusalem
• Richard feared that Saladin would cut his supply lines to the coast if the march pushed on
• He also figured it was the height of summer and water was scarce
• He did not believe that the Christians in the Holy City could hold the land once the crusaders returned to Europe
• Richard led his army back to the coast
