  • Who were they?
    • Lower end of social scale
    • Hated active and passive citizenship rules
    • Felt passionately about the price of bread
  • Paris commune divided into sections, this is where journees (20th June and 10th August 1792) were organised.
  • Journee on 20th of June 1792 = sans culottes marched to the Tuileries, demands for Louis to withdraw his vetoes. Louis made no promises but calmed the crowd.
  • 1st August 1792 - Brunswick manifesto, threatened harm if the King was injured. ADDED FUEL TO ARGUMENT, Louis siding with foreign enemy.
  • Journee of the 10th of August 1792 = 20000 sans culottes to Tuileries, 2 hour long battle, 1000 deaths and King hid in the Assembly.
  • Outcome of August journee:
    • Temporary suspension of the King
    • Removal of separation of active and passive citizens
    • Tribunal in same month for traitors.
    • House to house searches for suspects
  • Leading to the National Convention:
    • Girondins tried to win vote through stability argument
    • all 24 members of the convention were Jacobins
    • No Girondins due to dislike of sans culottes
  • 20th September 1792 = Opening of the National Convention
