Cards (12)

  • MEDIAN/TRAFFIC SEPARATOR - This provides between two sets of traffic lanes Intended to divide the traffic moving in opposite directions. Medians may be depressed, raised, or flush with the road surface.
  • TYPES OF ROAD MEDIAN:
Traversable - refers to a type of road median that can be crossed by vehicles, unlike a raised or non-traversable median, which physically prevents vehicles from moving across it. Median that by its design does not physically discourage or prevent vehicles from entering upon crossing over it. Such medians include painted medians and continuous two-way left turn lanes.
  • TYPES OF ROAD MEDIAN:
Non-traversable - refers to a type of road median that cannot be crossed by vehicles, such as a raised median barrier or concrete curb. A physical barrier in the roadways that separates traffic traveling in opposite directions, such as a concrete barrier or a landscaped island. These are recommended for all new or reconstructed multi-lane highways.
  • NON-TRAVERSABLE MEDIAN: Raised Median - A curbed sections that typically occupy the center of a roadway. It separate opposing streams of traffic and restrict turning movements.
  • NON-TRAVERSABLE MEDIAN: Flush medians are white diagonal lines, painted down the center of some urban and semi-urban roads, marking an area about one car-width wide.
  • NON-TRAVERSABLE MEDIAN: Depressed Median - Typically used where practical on freeway and other divided rural arterial. should be as wide as practical to allow for the addition of future travel lanes on the inside while maintaining a sufficient median width.
  • TRAVERSABLE MEDIAN: Median Width - The general range of median widths is from 6ft to a desirable dimension of 84ft or more on freeways and rural areas.
  • MEDIAN WIDTH FOR FREEWAYS:
    • 60 and Over MPH (Design Speed) = 60ft (Min. median width)
    • Under 60 MPH (Design Speed) = 40ft urban areas only (Min. median width)
  • MEDIAN WIDTH FOR RURAL HIGHWAYS:
    • 55 and over MPH (Design Speed)= 40ft (Min. width)
    • Under 55 MPH (Design Speed) = 22ft (Min. width)
  • MEDIAN WIDTH FOR URBAN STREETS:
    • 50 MPH (Design Speed) = 19.5ft (Min. median width)
    • 45 and LESS MPH (Design Speed) = 15.5ft (Min. median width)
  • A right-of-way is a right to make a way over a piece of land. It is a type of easement granted or reserved over the land for transportation purposes, such as a highway, public footpath, rail
transport, canal, as well as electrical transmission lines, and oil and gas pipelines.
  • Sight Distance is the length of road surface that a particular driver can see with an acceptable level of clarity. To visually identify and stop for a particular, unforeseen, roadway hazard or pass a slower vehicle without being in conflict with opposing traffic.
