• Initially was home to french Huguenots in the 15th century who bought clothing and leather factories
• Jewish from Eastern Europe took over fabric market
• Irish arrived due to potato famine and worked on the docks
• Bengali arrived partly due to colonisation and they worked as seafarers and in clothing ahops
• South brick lane has Bangladeshi restaurants whilst the north has fashion and Jewish food such as bagels
• 80% Indian restaurants owned by Bangladeshi and 25% Bangladeshis are chefs waiter or cooks and 60% work in catering and hotels
• Council investEd in training and advertising for tourism
• Clothing shops converted to restaurants due to cheap imports of clothes
• High rent due to proximity to city centre and Liverpool street
