      • psychoanalysis was a talking therapy
      • the therapist would enable a patient to access their unconscious mind to help them overcome psychological issues
      • this was done through questions about childhood and in some cases dream analysis
    • As a consequence of Freud psychoanalysis was developed
    • psychotherapists have evidence of the benefits of this therapy however this would not benefit those with severe disorders
      also dream analysis is unscientific and potentially harmful if dreams are wrongly interpreted
      • Psychologists who take and idiographic approach focus on the individual and their unique personal experience of human nature
      • this means they favour a qualitative research methods such as the case study , unstructured interviews and thematic behaviour . The idiographic approach does not seek to formulate laws or generalise results to others
      • Freud did try to produce generalisations from his case studies
      • they are still viewed as an idiographic approach because each persons psychological disorder derived from their own unique childhood experiences
