Coasts

Cards (3)

  • Characteristics of a Discordant coast:
    • strata is perpendicular to the coast
    • tends to form headlands and bays due to different rates of erosion
    • less resistant rocks erode faster to form bays
    • more resistant rocks erode more slowly and are left protruding as headlands
    • stacks and stumps are a product of more resistant rock
  • Characteristics of a concordant coast:
    • strata is parallel to the coast
    • headlands and bays aren't really present unless a fracture is found in the rock
    • no more or less resistant rock
    • no stacks or stumps
  • Headlands are eroded more than bays due to wave refraction
    • waves bend around the object
    • smooths the coastline over time
