Nervous system

    Cards (24)

    • What does the nervous system branch into?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
    • What does the central nervous system branch into?
The brain and the spinal cord
    • What does the peripheral nervous system branch off into?
Somatic nervous and peripheral nervous system
    • What does the sympathetic nervous system branch off into?
      Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
    • What is the brain the centre of
      Centre of awareness
    • How many hemispheres is the brain divided into?
      Two
    • Is the cerebral cortex more developed in humans or animals?
      Humans
    • What is the spinal cord an extension of ?
      The brain
    • The spinal cord is responsible for transporting messages to and from the brain to the peripheral nervous system
    • Also, the spine is responsible for reflexes
    • The outermost layer of the brain, responsible for higher cognitive functions, is called the Cerebral cortex
    • SNS governs muscle movements and receives information from sensory receptors
    • Somatic nervous system is the part of the peripheral nervous system that connects voluntary actions,it connects the skin, skelEton and muscles
    • Somatic nervous system receives information from the senses and transmits it to the CNS.It also transmits information from the CNS to direct movement of muscles
    • The autonomic nervous system is responsible for vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, and sexual arousal
    • SNS – mobilises body for action, energy output (fight or flight) PNS – conserves energy, maintains quiet state (calming effect) *They work together to keep your body in balance!
    • Some examples of parasympathetic
      • Pupils constrict
      • slowed heartbeat
      • stimulates the digestive system
      • increase the urinary input
    • Some examples of sympathetic
      • pupils dilate
      • increase heartbeat
      • Relaxed bladder
      • decrease digestive activity
    • What’s a quick definition of the autonomic nervous system?
Governs the brains involuntary activities (e.g heartbeat) and is self regulating (autonomous). It’s divided into the sympathetic branch (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic branch (rest and digest)
    • Definition of brain
The part of the central nervous system that is responsible for co-ordinating sensation, intellectual and nervous activity
    • Definition of CNS
Compromises of the brain and spinal cord. It receives information from the senses and controls the body’s responses.
    • Definition of the Peripheral nervous system
The part of the nervous system that’s outside the brain and spinal cord
    • Definition of Somatic nervous system

The part of the peripheral nervous system responsible for carrying sensory and motor information to and from the cns
    • Definition of spinal cord
A bundle of nerves fibres enclosed within the spinal column and which connects nearly all parts of the body with the brain
