  • what do the new right think about education?
They think that education is good but they do not like the way the education system is being ran. They think that education should be based on individual choice and self-reliance instead of state dependence. They think that education should be privatised and that market principles should be applied to education. There should be reduced state spending on education.

Privatising education will increase how well students perform in school.
  • marketisation
Introducing market forces of supply and demand to areas that are ran by the state e.g., education. Things should be owned privately which allows for competition.
  • formula funding
The more students a school has, the more money they get given.
  • Chubb + Moe
State education failed as private schools deliver a higher standard of education than state schools; pupils are not provided with the skills they need; state education has failed disadvantaged groups.

They compared the achievements of 60,000 pupils from low income families and 1,015 state + private schools and used parent surveys. They found that 5% of pupils from lower class families did better in private schools. They introduced the idea of a voucher system - parents are given a voucher to spend on education at a school they want to. Schools would then have to be more responsive to parents as the vouchers are their main source of income.
  • 2 functions the state serves to the education system
-creating a framework that schools need to complete e.g., ofsted, exams and league tables.
-ensure that a shared culture is transmitted through schools - national curriculum socialises pupils into a single culture.
  • what would the new right want to see in education?
    -more christianity
    -British literature
-Britain's positive role in world history.
  • AO3
-does not look at how pupils might decide not to do the work.
-working class people will be at a disadvantage if school is privatised.
-a parentocracy (ruled by parents) could be created. Middle class people would benefit from this. as they are in a better economic position.
