The brain

• Along with the spinal chord, the brain is part of the central nervous system
• Its made up of billions of interconnected neurones
• The brain is in charge of all of our complex behaviours
• It controls and coordinates everything you do: running, breathing, sleeping
• Regions of the brain

  1. Cerebal cortex

  • Outer wrinkly layer of the brain
  • Responsible for things like consciousness, intelligence, memory and language
• 2. Medulla

  • Base of the brain, at the top of the spinal chord
  • Controls unconscious activities like breathing and heartbeat
• 3. Cerebellum

  • Found at the back of the brain
  • Responsible for muscle coordination
