Cards (6)

  • WHAT DOES ERP STAND FOR?
    event related potentials
  • WHAT CAN ERP DO?
isolate brain waves that have responded to specific stimuli and therefore measure the electrical response to specific sensory/ cognitive/ motor events
  • HOW DOES ERP WORK?
electrodes placed on scalp detect neuronal activity when stimulus presented
  • STRENGTHS OF ERP?
    • possible to specifically detect an area that responds to a specific stimulus and can support claim of localisation of function
    • high temporal resolution compared to fMRI
    • cheaper than MRI
  • WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE HIGH TEMPORAL RESOLUTION?
little time delay between activity and reading
  • WEAKNESSES OF ERP?
    • background noise/ visual stimulation must be completely eliminated to establish valid data (requires time/ effort)
    • low spatial resolution
