2 - Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes

Cards (16)

  • What is a eukaryote?
An organism with cells that have nucleus and memebrane bound organellles, like mitochondria
  • What is a prokaryote?
An organism with cells that do not contain a true nucleus or other membrane bound organelles
  • What is a light microscope?
Uses light to allow us to see the specimens
  • What is an electron microscope?
Uses electrons to allow us to see specimens
  • How does a TEM work?
A beam of electrons passes through the specimen and is dispersed by the structures there. Scattered electrons are then captured on a photographic plate.
  • How does a SEM work?
The specimen is coasted in a thin layer of metal and a beam of electrons is bounced off the surface onto a photographic plate. 3D images can be formed.
  • What is found in a eukaryotic cell? e.g. yeast fungal cell
Food storage granules, ribosomes, vacuole, cell wall made of chitin, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, nucleus
  • Name the parts of a prokaryotic cell...
Cell wall made of peptidoglycan, bacterial DNA, plasmid DNA, cytoplasm, cell membrane, sometimes a flagellum
  • Abbrev. of microscope comparison table...
    CCRMAS2
  • 1st comparison?
    cost - cheap/expensive, schools/universities or labs
  • 2nd comparison?
Colour = if stained then yes, blakc and white
  • 3rd comparison?
Resolution - up to 0.2 micrometres, up to 0.1 nano metres
  • 5th comparison?
    Magnification - up to x2000, up to x2, 000, 000
  • 6th comparison?
Alive or dead - living, dead in a vaccum
  • 7th comparison?
Staining - yes if colourless but not neccesary, YES or can be added later
  • 8th comparison?
    2d or 3d - 2D, 3D/2D
