• Reaffirming the boundaries - shows what is right and wrong. Reminds members of society what happens when boundaries are crossed - Lucy Letby (the nurse who killed lots of babies)
• Changing values - values change so laws change. Sympathy occurs from the person who gets prosecuted which then changes the values - Homosexuality
• Social cohesion - brings people together and strengthens social cohesion. When a horrific crime is committed the sense of belonging to a community is strengthened - 9/11 or the One Love Manchester Ariana Grande concert
