What is an amino acid?
The building blocks of protein that joined together to make protein molecules
Defined the term essential aminos acid?
means the body cannot make it themselves and must get it from
food
Explain the key term biological value?
The number of essential amino acids the protein food contains
There are atleast
20 amino acids
10 amino acids
are essential for
children
Eight amino acids
are
essential
for
adults
High biological value proteins contain
or
10 essential amino acids
Low biological value proteins
are
missing one
or
more essential amino acids
If you eat you are more
LBV protein
foods
together
you will get
all amino acids
Children
are
growing
so they need more
essential amino acid
than
adults
Amino acids, which are sometimes referred to as the body's
'building blocks'
, make up
proteins.
The human body can only produce some types of
amino acids
(
non-essential
) so we must
eat
the ones our bodies can't produce (
essential
).
High biological value (HBV) proteins
Have all the
essential amino acids
that
humans
need.
Mostly located in
animal sources
(like
chicken
,
salmon
etc.)
Soya beans
also contain
HBV proteins.
Low biological value (LBV) proteins
Don't contain all the essential
amino acids
that humans need.
Only located in
plant-based foods.
E.g.
cereals
,
pulses
,
nuts
etc.
