Chemistry: The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change: Key terms

Cards (9)

  • Rate of reaction
a measure of how quickly a reactant is used up or a product is made
  • Concentration
the amount of substance in a given volume, normally measured in units of mol/dm3
  • Tangent
a straight line that touches a curve at one point
  • Gradient
gradient = difference in the y-axis value / difference in the x-axis value
  • Catalyst
a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction, but is not used up in the reaction itself
  • Reversible reaction

a reaction that can go forwards or backwards
  • Closed system
where nothing can enter or leave
  • Equilibrium
when the rate of forward reaction is equal to the rate of backwards reaction
  • Le Chatelier's Principle
a rule that can predict the effect of changing conditions on a system that is in equilibrium
