Lysosomes

Cards (4)

  • What is the structure of a lysosome?
Lysosomes are a type of Golgi vesicle with no obvious internal structure, membrane, digestive enzymes (lysozymes).
  • What is the pH like?
The pH inside the lysosome is acidic compared to the alkaline cytoplasm of the cell. This acidic pH is necessary for lysozymes to function.
  • What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysozymes inside lysosomes are responsible for digesting invading cells, old, unwanted parts of cells and complex biomolecules.
  • What is the function of the membrane?
The membrane ensures that the lysozymes are kept separate from the cytoplasm of the cell to prevent self-digestion.
