Our drive to breathe is controlled by the hypoxia (low O2) and hypercapnia (high CO2) through chemoreceptors.
Hypoxia is low O2
Hypercapnia is high CO2
Beathing rate will increase whenCO2 levels rise or when oxygen drops to ensure gas exchange is balanced.
