  • SALTAPS procedure 

    a protocol for the assessment of a sporting injury: stop, ask, look, touch, active movement, passive movement, strength / stand up

    stop the game if a player is injured and observe the injury

    ask questions about the injury e.g. where does it hurt?

    search for specific signs e.g. bleeding, bruising, swelling
  • Touch (SALTAPS)

    gently touch the injured area to identify painful regions and inflammation
  • Active Movement (SALTAPS)

    ask the player whether they can move the area without assistance
  • Passive Movement (SALTAPS)

    if there is active movement, gently move the injured area through a full range of motion = with assistance
  • Strength testing (SALTAPS)

    ask the player to stand, lift or put pressure on the injured area if they can
  • PRICE procedure 

    a protocol for the treatment of acute injuries: Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation,
  • Protection (PRICE)

    protect the injury and the person from any further damage, stop playing and remove from the field of play
  • Rest (PRICE)

    allow the injury time to heal and prevent from further injury
  • Ice (PRICE)

    apply ice indirectly to the skin to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Compression (PRICE)

    compress the injury with tear tape, or a stretch bandage to help reduce swelling
  • Elevation (PRICE)

    raise the injury above heart level to reduce blood flow to the area, which reduces swelling
  • Concussion six Rs procedure 

    a protocol for recognition of concussion: Recognise, Remove, Refer, Rest, Recover, Return
  • Recognise (6 Rs)

    ensure awareness of the signs and symptoms of concussion for those at the match
  • Remove (6 Rs)
    if a player has suspected concussion they must be removed from the field of play immediately
  • Refer (6 Rs)

    if removed from the field of play, the player should be referred to a qualified healthcare professional immediately
  • Rest (6 Rs)

    players must rest from exercise until they are symptom free and not be left alone for the first 24 hours
  • Recover (6 Rs)
    players must fully recover and be symptom free and before considering return to play; adults take a minimum of 1 week and under 18s a minimum of 2 weeks before seeking an authorised return from a healthcare professional
  • Return (6 Rs)

    to complete a safe return to the field the player must be symptom free, have written authorisation and complete the graduated return to play protocol
