required practical 1 : making soluble salts

Cards (3)

  • copper oxide + sulfuric acid to produce copper sulphate
  • copper oxide is a solid black powder
  • step for making soluble salt crystals:
    1. add a fixed amount of sulfuric acid this will be the limiting reactant none should be remaining after the reaction
    2. heat the acid till its almost boiling
    3. add copper oxide bit by bit
    4. stir with a glass rod
    5. the solution will turn blue
    6. stop adding more copperoxide when the powder remains in the solution in excess
    7. filter the excess copper oxide out
    8. heat the copper sulphate solution in an evaporating basin
    9. leave it to cool for 24 hours
    10. pat crystals dry
