The Nervous System

    Cards (13)

    • The Nervous System
-Consists of the Central Nervous System & The Peripheral Nervous System.
    • The Central Nervous System
-Consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
-Is the Origin of all complex commands & decisions.
    • Peripheral Nervous System
-Transmits messages from the CNS to the muscles and glands.
-Divided up into the Somatic and Autonomic Nervous Systems.
    • Somatic Nervous System
-Transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS.
-Receives information from the CNS that directs the muscles to act.
    • Autonomic Nervous System
-Transmits information to and from the bodily organs.
-It is automatic as it operates involuntarily.
-It is divided into the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems.
    • Functions of the Central Nervous System
-Its main functions are to control the behaviour and the regulation of the body's physiological processes.
-To be able to do this the brain must be able to receive the information from the sensory receptors and be able to send messages to the muscles and glands of the body.
    • The Brain
      -Centre of all conscious awareness.
-Receives sensory input from the sensory receptors.
-The brain's outer layer is the cerebral cortex which is responsible for our thoughts and language.
    • The Spinal Cord
-Allows the brain to monitor and regulate bodily processes & coordinate voluntary movements.
-Connected to different parts of the body which connect with specific muscles and glands.
      -Performs simple reflexes.
-If the spinal cord is damaged, areas of the body will be cut off from the brain which means they will stop functioning.
    • The Somatic Nervous System
-Transmits signals from the CNS to the skeletal muscle.
-Responsible for voluntary and involuntary movements.
-Its made up of; 12 pairs of cranial nerves, 31 pairs of spinal nerves.
-These nerves have both sensory and motor neurons.
      -Involved in reflex actions.
    • Function of the Autonomic Nervous System
-Carries out actions without conscious awareness.
-Split into Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System.
    • Function of the Sympathetic Nervous System
      -Uses the neurotransmitter noradrenaline.
-Active when fight or flight is aroused.
    • Function of the Parasympathetic Nervous System
      -Uses the neurotransmitter of acetylcholine.
-Slows heart rate & reduces blood pressure.
-Can be referred to as the body's rest & digest system.
    • What are the main 2 functions of the Nervous System?
-To collect , process and respond from information in the environment.
-To co-ordinate the working of different organs & cells in the body.
