• What are the anatomical positions of the body?

• What is the Median Sagittal Plane (MSP)?

  It is the division of the body into two equal halves.
• What does the Sagittal/Parasagittal plane do?

  It divides the body into unequal left and right sections.
• What is the Coronal Plane?

  It is the anterior/posterior division of the body.
• What does the Transverse / Axial Plane do?


  It divides the body into superior and inferior sections.
• What are the main planes of the body?

  • Median Sagittal Plane (MSP): equal halves
  • Sagittal/Parasagittal Plane: unequal L/R division
  • Coronal Plane: anterior/posterior division
  • Transverse/Axial Plane: superior/inferior division
• What is the In/Outer canthus of the eye?

  It is the medial/lateral meeting point of the upper and lower eyelids.
• What is the Infra Orbital margin/point?

  It is the inferior rim of the orbit.
• What is the Nasion?

  It is the articulation between the nasal and frontal bones.
• What is the Glabella?


  It is a bony prominence on the frontal bone superior to the nasion.
• What is the Vertex?

  It is the highest point of the skull in the MSP.
• What is the Inion?

  It is the external occipital protuberance found on the occipital bone.
• What is the External auditory meatus (EAM)?

  It is the opening within the ear that leads to the external auditory canal.
• What are the landmarks of the skull?

  • In/Outer canthus of the eye: medial/lateral meeting point of eyelids
  • Infra Orbital margin/point: inferior rim of the orbit
  • Nasion: articulation between nasal & frontal bones
  • Glabella: bony prominence on frontal bone
  • Vertex: highest point of the skull in MSP
  • Inion: external occipital protuberance
  • External auditory meatus (EAM): opening leading to external auditory canal
• What is the Inter-Orbital / Pupillary line?

  It joins the center of the two orbits or the center of two pupils when the eyes are looking straight forward.
• What is the Infra-Orbital line?


  It joins the infra-orbital margin.
• What is the Anthropological baseline / frankfurter line (ABL)?

  It joins the infra-orbital margin to the EAM.
• What is the Orbito-meatal / Radiographic baseline?

  It extends from the outer canthus to the center of the EAM at 10° to ABL.

  • Inter-Orbital / Pupillary line: joins centers of two orbits
  • Infra-Orbital line: joins infra-orbital margin
  • Anthropological baseline (ABL): joins infra-orbital margin to EAM
