Freud believed humans have strong, natural desires, but society teaches us to control them.
Conflict in Our Minds: ID
the part of us that wants immediate pleasure.
Conflict in Our Minds: EGO
part that tries to satisfy those desires in a way that fits with society's rules.
Conflict in Our Minds: SUPEREGO
our internal sense of right and wrong, which punishes us with guilt if we break the rules.
The ego is responsible for our conscious thoughts and actions
The superego is responsible for our conscience and moral values
The id is responsible for our unconscious desires and impulses
Displacement
Redirecting our feelings onto something else.
Reaction Formation:
Acting in a way that’s opposite to how we really feel.
Projection
Blaming others for the feelings we have.
Isolation
Remembering events but not feeling the emotions connected to them.
Oral stage (0-2 years): Focus on eating, sucking, etc.
Anal stage (2-4 years): Focus on control (like potty training).
Phallic stage (4-6 years): Focus on the genitals and the development of feelings toward the opposite-sex parent (Oedipus complex for boys, Electra complex for girls).
Latency period (7-12 years): No focus on sex.
Genital stage (12+ years): Sexual maturity begins.
Problems at any stage can cause issues later in life (e.g., oral fixation could lead to habits like smoking).
