    Cards (6)

    • Internalisation : DEEPEST,ISI

      • A deep type of conformity where we take on the majority view because we accept it as correct. person genuinly accepts the grroup norms.
      • accepting and agreeing with the group publicly and privately
      • Leads to a far reaching and permanent change in behaviour even when the group is absent.
    • Identification : MODERATE, NSI
      • a moderate type of conformity, we publicly act the same way as the group because we value it and want to be a part of it.
      • temporarily adopting the habits or attitudes and behaviours of a group if they value the group and wish to be included in it
      • Identification results in short-termchange as the individual is stillnot completely in agreementwith the group
    • Compliance: SHALLOW- NSI
      - superficial and temporary type of conformity where we outwardly go along with the majority view, but privately disagree with it. goes along with others in public but not changing personal behaviour.
-Compliance is the weakest type of conformity as it only involves surface and superficial change and it ceases when someone is not with the group
    • Conformity can be explained as stemming from two different motivations:

      • Normative social influence ( NSI): the need to be liked/accepted by the group ( the fear of rejection)
      • Informational social influence (ISI): the need to know what to do ( fear of social disapproval/humiliation)
    • Normative social Influence (NSI)

       - occurs when an individual is keen to adopt the social norms of a specific group, ie what is normal for a social group
-likely to occur in situation where you may feel concerned about rejection, greater need for social support.
-Someone is more likely to be affected by NSI if they feel that their behaviour and attitudes do not align with those of the group
      • NSI is a emotional process
      • NSI as an explanation of conformity is linked to compliance and identification.
    • Informational social Influence ( ISI)
-tends to take place when the individual is unsure or lacks knowledge about what to do or how to behave in a specific situation, occurs when the individual looks to the group for guidance.we assume that the group is more likely to be correct.
      • Someone is more likely to be affected by ISI if they are insecure about what is deemed 'right/wrong' behaviour,
      • ISI as an explanation of conformity is linked to internalisation
      • The essence of ISI is cognitive as it is based on information processing
