• New Deal 1933 - included aid for black people and white people without official discrimination - Civilian Conservation Corps - gave work for unemployed people
• New Deal aid was demanded by a black Republican called Oscar de Priest
• Fair Labour Standards Act = didn’t cover agriculture/ domestic services , many black people were excluded
• Passed Executive Order 8587 , prohibited discrimination on the basis of race , colour , creed
• Roosevelt came under pressure to ensure a supply of labour for defence and influenced by the threat of a 100,000 strong march on washington
