  • Rhyme
    The repetition of a final syllable in different words, most often at the ends of lines at a certain interval.
  • Exact rhyme
    When the words of the final syllable in different words sound the same while the beginning of that final syllable differs.
    e.g. day/may/fiance
  • Identical rhyme
    The same word rhyming with itself
  • Slant rhyme
    Words that do not rhyme completely, only similar but not identical
    e.g. say/rake/mate
  • Eye rhyme
    The words “rhyme” because of similar spelling but they are pronounced differently.
    e.g. through, rough, though
  • Meter
    The rhythm of the language in the poem. The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. It is measured in feet.
  • Foot
    A unit of meter in poetry. The part of a poetic line (1-3 syllables) with a certain stress pattern.
