  • Setting
    It is the point in time and place. It must evoke the five senses
  • Purpose of a setting
    Give background about the story, provide conflict between man vs. nature or man vs. society, reveal about character from each person, provide mood or atmosphere, give imagination about the image of all characters to readers by using the five senses

    Neutral, spiritual, dynamic
  • Neutral setting
    The setting is not important. It's simply just a place where the action takes place
  • Spiritual setting

    Vague conventional, implied values. The values embodied in the physical setting. There is no easy relationship between physical setting and moral values.
  • Dynamic setting

    Setting me thrust itself dynamically into the action affecting events and being intern affected by them until seeing seems to assume the role of the major character
  • Functions of a setting, as a;
    Metaphor, dominant element, in non-realistic fiction, setting and whole story
  • Setting as a metaphor
    It becomes symbolic of the theme of the story.
  • Atmosphere
    Metaphorical function.
  • Place as the dominant element

    Local color or regionalism. The work of fiction which the spacial setting or place dominates.
  • Setting in non-realistic fiction

    The stories events could not happen in real life
  • Setting and the whole story
    Setting is the most important part of the story but it cannot exist by itself. A good setting can support the whole story
