gunpowder plot

• In 1605 Guy Fawkes and others led the gunpowder plot
• it was deigned to blow up the House of Parliament and kill King James
• King James was terrified of regicide and asked Shakespeare to write a play about it
• Macbeth was written in 1606- a year after the plot
