Martin Luther

• he believed in sola scripture: the bible is the only source of religious authority
• he believed that Christians should not say that some parts of the bible are true and others are false
• he believed that the bible gives the standard of measurement for deciding on the truth of church teachings
• he said that without the bible, there would be no church. this precedence if the bible over the church is illustrated in Luther's belief that salvation comes through faith, not through the institutions of the church and that all christians have equal access to god through prayer. this belief is called 'the priesthood of all believers' and comes from the New Testament
