despite its controversy and bizarreness the psychodynamic approach had a huge influence on psychology and western contemporary thought . Alongside behaviourism it remained the dominant force in psychology for the first half of the 20th century
It has also been used to explain a wide range of phenomena including personality development , abnormal behaviour , moral development and gender
The approach is also significant in drawing attention to the connection between experiences in childhood such as our relationship with our parents and later development
