• The Civil Rights Act of 1875 was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1883.
• Jim Crow segregation laws developed rapidly between 1887 and 1891 when 8 southern states introduced formal segregation on trains, 3 states extended this to waiting room facilities too.
• In Mississippi, literacy tests of 1880 were arranged that uneducated whites had simpler questions than AAs.
• From the 1880s, lynching heightened. White mobs would torture and kill AA men. The allegations would be crimes like raping a white woman. Lynching was a public event so even children witnessed it.
