• triadic function: parents, home, family in molding the adolescent to be a better member of society
• challenge: transition from dependence on family to increasing responsibilities
• factors that might affect parent-child relationship:

  • parental rejection
  • abuse
  • socioeconomic status
  • early deprivation

  might lead to rebellion and delinquency
• adolescents are not "blank slates" and parents are not in total control on how they will behave and how their personality will develop
• adolescents can be born with temperemental traits that can be accounted from their genes
• self presentation is presenting oneself to their people to gain favorable impression
