Experimental designs

Cards (7)

  • independent groups
    two separate groups of participants
    • group 1 does the first condition, group 2 does the other condition
    Pros:
    • no order effect
    • less demand characteristics
    Cons:
    • need more participants
    • more chance of individual differences
  • repeated measures

the same group of participants for each condition
    Pros:
    • need less participants
    • reduced individual differences
    Cons:
    • may get order effect
    • demand characteristics
  • matched pairs
two different groups of people who are closely matched
    • one group does one condition, second group does the other
    Pros:
    • no order effects
    • reduces individual differences
    • less demand characteristics
    Cons:
    • need more participants
  • order effects
the effect of doing the same task twice. the results of whichever task is completed second may be better or worse because of order effects rather than because of the IV
  • demand characteristics
participants may change their behaviour as they know they are being studied. may behave the way they think the researcher wants them to
  • counterbalancing
first group does condition 1 first, second group does condition 2 first
    • balances out the potential effects of doing something
    • used to reduce 'order effect'
  • randomisation
randomly allocating Ps to each condition
    • random name generator etc.
