The present

• to form the present tense:

  take the end off of the INFINITIVE,

  keep the STEM,

  then just add the correct PRESENT TENSE ENDING

  
  

  eg:

• regular(weak) verbs:

  remove -en or -n to get the STEM,

  then add either 'e' , 'st' , 't' or 'en'

  eg

  wohnen

  ich wohne

  du wohnst

  er/sie/es/man wohnte

  wir/Sie/sie wohnen

  ihr wohnt
• irregular (strong) verbs:

  the vowel in the stem changes in 2nd and 3rd pers. sing. use the same endings

  a -> ä [ waschen = wäschst, wascht]

  long e -> i [geben = gibst, gibt]

  e -> ie [ sehen = siehst, sieht]
• modal verbs in the present:

  • stem has a different vowel for singular forms ( können -> ich kann)
  • first and third person sing have no ending (sollen-> er/sie/es soll)
  • the second verb used with a modal is always in the infinitive ( ich mag nichts versäumen)
