  • who did the experiment on capacity in STM?

    Jacobs
  • what is the procedure and findings for capacity in STM
participants were presented with strings of letters and digits. the length was increased from 3-4,5-6, until the participant was unable to repeat the sequence. (free recall technique)
on average participants recalled 9 digits and 7 letters.
mean span for digits = 9.3
    mean span for letters= 7.3
  • what are some criticisms of Jacobs experiments?
letters may be harder to recall because there are more letters in the alphabet than 10 digits
  • What did Miller find out?
you can memorise 7 plus or minus 2 chunks
  • who did the experiment for duration on STM?
    Peterson and Peterson
  • what was the procedure and findings for duration on STM
participants were given trigrams to remember, but were immediately asked to count backwards in 3's out loud for 3,6,9,12,15,18 seconds. done to prevent rehearsal. participants then asked to recall the trigram in correct order
cannot hold information in STM unless we rehearse it. limited duration = 18-30 seconds
  • what is the procedure and findings for duration in long term memory?

recall tested using photo recognition using 50 photos, and free recall where participants recalled names.
for photo recognition after 15 years 90% accurate. 48 years 70%.
free recall was less accurate. 15 years 60%. 48 years 30%.
this shows that LTM may last up to a lifetime for some materials
  • who did the experiment for duration in long term memory?
    Bahrick
