• What are some rights in a workplace?

  • a contract of employment, setting pout job expectations, pay and terms
  • At least a minimum wage, with laws setting out the lowest wage
  • Protection from discrimination, on ethnicity, age, gender, etc.
  • health and safety, with laws for a safe working environment
• What do trade unions do today?


  they maintain and improve conditions of employment through collective action
• How do Staff Association carry out similar roles as trade Unions?

  • Negotiation with employers to improve pay and conditions
  • Representing workers interests to government to affect policies,to employers in relation to rights etc.
  • Support if members through education and training, giving financial help if needed
