Physics - energy resources

    Cards (13)

    • what are some uses of energy?

      transport, generating electricity, and heating.
    • burning fossil fuels provide large amount of energy, and is reliable. However...

this also releases a large amount of CO2, and is contributing to climate change.
    • a renewable energy resource is...

one that is being replensiehd as it is used.
    • what are some examples of renewable energy resources?
wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power, tidal power, biofuels, geothermal, and wave power.
    • renewable energy resources will never...

      run out.
    • once in place, renewable energy resources do not...

add any CO2 to the atmosphere. they do not contribute to climate change.
    • wind power and solar power are not...

reliable - not sunny or windy enough.
    • hydroelectric power is reliabe, however...

habitats are destroyed when dams are built, and valleys are flooded.
    • tidal power is reliable, but they can also be...

      harmful to wildlife.
    • wave power is...

      reliable
    • geothermal energy uses heat from...

The Earth to generate electricity and heat building. It is reliable, but not used much in the UK.
    • what are biofules produced from?
      plant materials
    • how does electricity generate?

fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) burned to release heat energy. Heat used to boil water, creating steam. Steam turns turbines. Turbines are connected to generators. Movement in generators start electrons flowing through wires, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. Then, the electrical energy is distributed through power lines for use in homes and businesses.
