• Charles needed quick victory so not to squander his advantage
• Battle of Edgehill in October first battle - indecisive and ended in stalemate – Parliament couldn’t defeat King.
• But opened up way for royalists to London
• However King stopped at Oxford in November and wasted the opportunity
• Essex and trained bands prevented King entering London at battle of Turnham Green
