Dominic was named after St. Dominic of Silos
Born between 1171 to 1173
Started his clerical studies at 7 years old under his Uncle
He went to the Cathedral School of Palencia (later became University of Palencia) at the age of 14
He studied Philosophy and Theology at the University of Palencia
He sold his books to help feed the poor during famine. He said, "I cannot study on dead skins when the skins of men are dying."
He joined the Canons Regular of the Cathedral of Osma at the age of 24
Encounter with the Cathars
➢ St. Dominic traveled with his bishop, Bishop Diego.
➢ Encountered the Albigensians or Cathars → who taught that the physical world
was evil.
➢ St. Dominic had a debate with the inn-keeper until morning. After that, the
inn-keeper was converted back to being christian

➢ Twelve women who were converted by St. Dominic from Catharism decided to
offer their lives in the service of the Church by becoming nuns
The Order of Preachers
➢ Bishop Fulk, the bishop of Toulouse approved the foundation of a new religious
order
➢ In 1216, St. Dominic and his brethen adopted the rule of St. Augustine, because of its universality
The Order of Preachers Lived in a house donated by Peter Seila → called "Cradle of the Order."
On December 22, 1216 → Pope Honorius III → issued the 1st bull → confirmed the new order
On January 21, 1217 → Pope Innocent IlI → issued the 2nd bull → change the name to "Order of the Preachers"
On August15, 1217 → St. Dominic placed his trust in God and dispersed the 16 brethren
On May1221 → St. Dominic returned to Bologna for the second general chapter
On August5,1221 → St. Dominic died
