Christmas past

Cards (5)

  • Light flashed upon the room

The Ghost of Christmas past arrives with a flash of light which is symbolises a sudden warning for Scrooge. Light also has connotations of redemption, so this could foreshadow a change in Scrooge's behaviour.
  • Unearthly visitor

The Ghost of Christmas Past is described as not of the earth and is therefore frightening to Scrooge
  • It was a strange figure - like a child: yet not so like a child

The Ghost of Christmas Past is constantly changing and adapting. This suggests that the ghost isn't a fixed entity and that in order to enact change in Scrooge lots of different visions will need to occur.
  • From the crown of its head there sprung a bright clear jet of light
Light symbolises redemption and purity so it is clear that this ghost has arrived with good purposes.
  • Its belt sparkled and glittered
The connotations of sparkled and glittered are celebratory so perhaps, at its core, the ghost is here to bring joy to Scrooge's life
