Cells

Cards (6)

  • Cells can be Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic
    1. All living things are made up of cells
    2. Eukaryotic cells are complex. All animal and plant cells are eukaryotic
    3. Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler. Bacteria are prokaryotic cells
    Eukaryotic - has nucleus
    prokaryotic - no nucleus
  • The different parts of a cell are called subcellular structures.
Most animal cells have these subcellular structures:
    1. Nucleus - Contains genetic material, genetic material controls what the cell does
    2. Cytoplasm - Where most of the chemical reactions happen
    3. Cell membrane - controls what goes in and out of the cell
    4. Mitochondria - where most aerobic respiration happens. Respiration transfers energy that the cell needs, to work
    5. Ribosomes - these are where proteins are made in the cell
  • Plant cells usually have all the bits that animal cells have.
    They also have:
    1. A cell wall - made of cellulose. It supports the cell and strengthens it
    2. A permanent vacuole - contains cell sap
    3. Chloroplast - where photosynthesis happens. Photosynthesis makes food for the plant

  • Bacteria cells have three subcellular Structures:
    1. A cell wall - made of cellulose. It supports the cell and strengthens it
    2. Cell membrane - controls what goes in and out of the cell
    3. Cytoplasm - where most of the chemical reactions happen
    4. A single loop of DNA. Bacteria don't have a 'true' nucleus
    5. Plasmids - small rings or extra DNA
