Chemical Reaction

Cards (15)

  • Chemical Reactions
it is the COMBINATION OF TWO OR MORE ELEMENTS bonded together to make a new substance.
  • Chemical Equations
it is the REPRESENTATION of a chemical reaction expressed as a formula.
  • Subscripts
it only refer to the ATOM THAT THEY ARE BEHIND.
  • Coefficients
APPLY TO THE ENTIRE COMPOUND. You multiply the coefficients and subscripts.
  • Parenthesis
If the elements or compounds are inside of parenthesis, then the subscripts behind the parenthesis APPLIES TO EVERYTHING INSIDE.
  • Chemical Reaction
The kind of matter changes and at least ONE NEW SUBSTANCE WITH NEW PROPERTIES IS FORMED.
  • Physical Change
The appearance/form of the matter changes but the KIND OF MATTER IN THE SUBSTANCE DOES NOT CHANGE.
  • Law of Conservation of Mass
    —can be created/destroyed
    —rearrange in space
  • Reactants
We need to have a change
  • Products
    What it produced
  • these are the ways in writing a chemical reaction:
    1. Sentence form
    2. Word Equation
    3. Chemical Equation
  • Because of the principle of the Conservation of Matter, an equation must be balanced.
  • Word Equation
describes chemical change using the names of the reactants and change.
ex. Potassium Hydroxide + Sulfuric Acid —> Potassium Sulfate + Water
  • Sentence Form
ex. Aluminum Hydroxide reacts Magnesium producing Aluminum and Magnesium Hydroxide. in what form it is written?
  • Chemical Equation
    Al(OH)3 + Mg —> Al + 3Mg(OH)2
in what form it is written?
