Epispadia and Hypospadia

• Epispadias


  Urethral oriffce is located above (dorsal surface) of the penis; the condition often occurs with exstrophy of the bladder
• Hypospadias


  Urethral orifice is located below (ventral surface) the glans penis along the ventral surface
• Circumcision may NOT be performed on a newborn with epispadias or hypospadias
• Epispadias and Hypospadias

  Caused by multiple factors:

  • genetics
  • teratogenic
• Epispadias and Hypospadias

  Surgery: Meatotomy or Penile flapping
• Epispadias and Hypospadias

  Surgery: Ideal age - 1 year old or before toilet training
• Epispadias and Hypospadias Postop

  Medications to relieve bladder spams: Anticholinergic
• Epispadias and Hypospadias Postop

  Notify the pediatric surgeon if there is NO urinary output for 1 hour - indicate kinks or obstruction in urinary stent/diversion
• Epispadias and Hypospadias Postop

  Parent instructions: AVOID giving tub bath until stent is removed
• Epispadias and Hypospadias

  Complication - infertility
